Bali, Indonesia (2 to 5 June 2025)
From 2 to 5 June 2025, a group of 36 students and 5 teachers embarked on a meaningful 4-day, 3-night overseas trip to Bali, Indonesia. The programme was designed to nurture students’ 21st Century Competencies (21CC), particularly Civic and Global Literacy, Critical and Inventive Thinking, and Communication and Collaboration Skills, through authentic and experiential learning beyond the classroom.
Exploring Traditional Craft and Cultural Heritage in Amed
The journey began in Amed, a coastal region known for its scenic black-sand beaches and rich cultural traditions. At the Amed Salt Centre, students learned about the traditional salt-making process that has sustained local livelihoods for generations. Through hands-on participation, they gained a deeper appreciation of Bali’s cultural heritage and reflected on the importance of preserving traditional practices amidst modernisation.
School Immersion and Community Action in Amed
At SDN 4 Bunutan, students participated in a school immersion experience that offered valuable insights into education and community life in Bali. They conducted activities for the primary school children, designing interactive games, teaching simple dance routines, and introducing Kent Ridge Secondary School through engaging presentations. The lively exchanges and shared laughter created meaningful connections, allowing students to appreciate the warmth, enthusiasm, and resilience of their Balinese peers while gaining a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and learning environments beyond Singapore.
Following the school immersion, students joined the Trash Hero Amed initiative, a local environmental stewardship programme, where they participated in a beach clean-up alongside community volunteers. This experience strengthened their sense of civic responsibility, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
Learning about Marine Conservation in Kuta
The group travelled to Kuta, where they visited the Coral Triangle Center to learn about the rich biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Through interactive exhibits and guided discussions, students explored the threats facing marine life and the importance of collective global action for conservation.
At the Turtle Conservation and Education Center on Serangan Island, students learned about efforts to protect endangered sea turtles through breeding and rehabilitation programmes. They witnessed first-hand how education and community engagement play vital roles in wildlife protection.
Understanding History and Identity in Denpasar
On the final day, students visited the Bajra Sandhi Monument in
Denpasar, a national monument commemorating the struggles and resilience
of the Balinese people. Through the dioramas and exhibits, students gained
insights into Bali’s history and drew parallels to Singapore’s own nation-building
journey. The visit encouraged them to reflect on the shared values of perseverance,
unity, and pride in one’s national identity.
Capturing Learning and Reflection
Throughout the trip, students reflected daily using the Connect–Extend–Challenge framework, linking their experiences to the E21CC competencies. The journey deepened their global awareness, empathy and appreciation for sustainability and cultural diversity, embodying the school’s vision of nurturing hearts of compassion, inventive minds and resilient spirits ready to thrive in a global community, living out the spirit of going Beyond Frontiers.
